Top Science Fiction Fantasy Games at E3 2017

E3

I’m always excited to look at E3, the world’s greatest gaming convention. Unfortunately, this year’s E3 left me wanting a bit more.

There wasn’t that amazing feeling I got when first witnessing games like Zelda Breath of the Wild, Fallout 4, or Horizon Zero Dawn.

But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some good ones. Here are the top Science Fiction Fantasy games at E3 2017.

Note I’m not talking about previously highlighted games. So, as amazing as they looked, God of War IV and the Breath of the Wild DLC are not covered here.

Anthem

The first thing I noticed about this game was the gorgeous graphics. Looking around the market area, a giant robot stomping by in the background, then getting into the javelin exosuit bordered live action.

Then the javelin jumps off a docking area into a vast open world that simply absorbed me. The sense of scale was amazing, flying around through canyons iron man style, diving into a river then coming up blasting hostile enemies.

I can’t wait to see more of what this game has to offer.

Days Gone

Initially I thought, oh no, not another zombie game. But the preview of Days Gone has convinced me.

The story takes place after the collapse of society, with humans struggling to survive while undead creatures roam free. I love the gloomy setting where lonely roads lead through forest and valleys to humble villages.

We get a glimpse of the main character thrown off his motorcycle, beat the crap out of the attackers, then use a horde of zombies against some bandit camp, all in dynamic weather.

The world of this grimy, fast-paced action game looks like it’ll be a joy to explore.

Ni No Kumi 2

I’ll be honest, I was never interested in Ni No Kumi. At all.

The graphics looked too childish. The gameplay seemed boring. And what’s up with that name?

But IGN gave part one an amazing 9.4 review, so when part two was announced, it caught my gaze. And I have to acknowledge the anime-like graphics are pretty stylish, and the characters appear memorable.

It actually makes me feel nostalgic, reminding me of JRPG’s of old like Dragon Warrior 3 and Chrono Trigger where I’d get immersed in a game for, not just the graphics and variety, but how fascinating the world was and how deep the story went.

Shadow of Colossus

I know, this game is a remake of an old PS2 exclusive from 2005. But what a game to remake.

If I had to make a list of the top 10 games ever, this would definitely be on it. Shadow of Colossus is so treasured that it seeded the story of my first soon-to-be-released novel.

But it’s not just the story of a nameless protagonist trying to revive his love that’s stays with you. It’s the vast lonely landscape, the towering colossi roaming the wilderness, that feeling of awe when they first appear stomping the ground with quaking steps, and the sudden realization of the imminent battle that just satisfies the kid in all of us.

Man I can’t wait to experience this again.

Beyond Good & Evil 2

Fans of Beyond Good & Evil have been clamouring for a sequel ever since the first game was released back in 2003. I wasn’t too excited about Beyond Good & Evil 2 because Ubisoft tends to make games with way too much sneaking, and I’m a beat-em-up type of guy.

But when I saw the in game demo of just how big the world is, where the developer showed that one city is just a dot on a planet, and that planet is just a dot in a universe, all capable of being explored in your very cool spaceship, I was blown away.

Usually games that make that can of promise tend to disappoint, as we saw recently in No Man’s Sky, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

And the story of a rag-tag team of outcasts trying to solve some mystery in an oppressed society isn’t half bad either.

So those are my science fiction fantasy picks for E3 2017. Which one’s your favourite? Let me know in the comments.
